This is another one of my glorious improvised pictures - using a cooking pot to stabilize my camera - in the rain! So this is me in a thrifted seafoam-coloured cardigan, a polka dot top that I bought only yesterday and my selfmade skirt! I love this combination of colours and (quite by chance) my umbrella doesn't look to bad with all of this!

Wieder mal ein ziemlich improvisiertes Selbstauslöserfoto! Diesmal diente ein Kochtopf auf unserem Terrassentisch als Stativ - im Regen! Also: Das bin ich in meinem Cardigan aus dem örtlichen Secondhand-Shop, einem Pünktchentop, das ich erst gestern gekauft hab und meinem selbstgemachten Rock. Die Farbkombi mag ich wirklich sehr und (ganz zufällig) passt mein Regenschirm auch ganz gut!

Recipe: Vintage Sugar & Spice Coffeecake

Today I tested this recipe from the Better Homes and Gardens cookbook first published in 1953:

"Combine 2 1/2 cups sifted all-purpose flour, 2 cups brown sugar, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 2/3 cup shortening; mix till crumbly. Reserve 1/2 cups of the mixture.
To remaining crumbs, add 2 teaspoons of baking powder, 1/2 teaspoon soda, 1/2 teaspoon each cinnamon and nutmeg; mix thoroughly.
Add 1 cup sour milk and 2 beaten eggs. Mix well. Pour into 2 waxed-paper-lined 8x8x2-inch baking pans; sprinkle with reserved crumbs. Bake in moderate oven (375 degrees Fahrenheit) 25 to 30 minutes. Serve warm."

A great-aunt of mine who lived in the USA gave my parents this cookbook on their wedding day in 1971; my Mom has never used it but I started baking from it a few years ago. Now and then I try out recipes that I can do with the ingredients available here in Germany - this means getting to grips with the American measuring system and oven temperatures given in Fahrenheit which both can be a bit tricky ... but this is a very easy recipe and the result is absolutely delicious - fluffy, spicy and crispy!

Heute habe ich mal wieder ein Rezept aus dem amerikanischen Better Homes and Gardens-Kochbuch meiner Eltern ausprobiert:

2 1/2 Tassen Mehl
2 Tassen Rohrzucker
1/2 Teelöffel Salz
2/3 Tassen Sonnenblumenöl
2 1/2 Teelöffel Backpulver (oder 2 Teelöffel Backpulver & 1/2 Teelöffel Soda)
1/2 Teelöffel Zimt
1/2 Teelöffel frisch geriebene Muskatnuss
1 Tasse Buttermilch (als Ersatz Joghurt mit ein bisschen Milch verdünnt)
2 Eier, verquirlt

Mehl, Rohrzucker, Salz und Sonnenblumenöl in einer Schüssel mischen, mit einer Gabel krümelig rühren. 1/2 Tasse dieser Mischung beiseitestellen. Zum Rest Backpulver, Zimt und Muskatnuss geben, gut verrühren. Dann die Buttermilch und die Eier zugeben, mit dem Handrührgerät gut vermischen. In 2 mit Backpapier ausgelegte Browniebackformen geben, mit den aufgehobenen Krümeln bestreuen. Bei 190 Grad Celsius 30 Minuten backen.

Das Kochbuch, aus dem dieses Rezept stammt, hat eine amerikanische Großtante von mir meinen Eltern 1971 zur Hochzeit geschenkt, seine erste Auflage stammt aus dem Jahr 1953. Meine Ma hat es nie benutzt, aber ich habe vor ein paar Jahren begonnen, regelmäßig Rezepte aus diesem Buch auszuprobieren. Das heißt natürlich auch, dass man sich mit den amerikanischen Maßeinheiten rumschlagen muss, aber mit einer Umrechnungstabelle für die Temperatur und einem Satz measuring cups passieren Backunfälle nicht mehr ganz so häufig ... Das Rezept für diesen Sugar & Spice Coffeecake ist ja gottseidank ganz einfach und in einer halben Stunde hat man alles (inklusive Abwasch!) erledigt. Das Ergebnis ist jedenfalls umwerfend: fluffig, würzig und knusprig zugleich!

OOTD: Beige and Proud

This is one of my favourite outfits, usually I combine it with colourful scarves or other accessories to work against the "beigeness". The skirt is made from several layers of finely knitted cloth and perfect for the cooler temperatures at the beginning of autumn, the shoes are Clarks and my first choice when I know that I will spend the day running around a lot - today I wore them to the local fleamarket and they were perfect! The green top has a lovely sunflowery pattern. One of my accessories today was a hair ornament, made from bits of see-through cloth that I cut into strips and sowed onto a hair clip, very easy and quick to make:

Das ist wirklich eins von meinen absoluten Lieblingsoutfits und meist kombiniere ich es mit richtig bunten Schals oder anderen Kleinigkeiten, um dem Mehlwurm-Effekt etwas entgegenzuwirken. Der Rock ist aus mehreren Schichten Feinstrickstoff, richtig gut für das kühlere Wetter so Anfang Herbst. Die Schuhe sind Clarks und für Tage, an denen man viel rumrennen muss, einfach perfekt (heute habe ich sie getragen, um mich auf einem örtlichen Flohmarkt umzusehen)! Das grüne Top hat ein wunderschönes Muster, das mich an Sonnenblumen erinnert und eines meiner farbigeren Accessoires ist heute ein Haarschmuck, die ich selbst gemacht habe: einfach Streifen von steifen, halb durchsichtigen Stoffen auf Haarspangen nähen - schon fertig!

OOTD: Owls and Stripes

So this is what I wore today to go to the University library! The striped top I found at a plus-size fleamarket and the skirt used to be a dress from my goth period which I wanted to turn into something wearable for a long time now. And because I got my OWN SOWING MACHINE as a pre-birthday present two days ago (yay yay yay, thank you Mom and Dad!) this skirt was literally the first thing I made to test the machine (which, by the way, urgently needs to be given a name, maybe you have some suggestions for me! Somehow all my household implements end up with names; I once had a washing machine called Hamlet ...)

I combined this outfit with those awfully cute owl earrings that I found two weeks ago at Brigitte Bijou and my navy Ulla Popken linen jacket. The flower on my jacket is made from green and turquoise tweed and is by Ness, a Scottish label I absolutely adore.

Und das hatte ich an, als ich heute zur Universitätsbibliothek musste: das gestreifte Top habe ich bei einem Große Größen-Flohmarkt gefunden, der Rock war mal ein Kleid aus meiner Goten-Phase, das ich schon lange mal in was Tatsächlich Tragbares verwandeln wollte. Weil ich nun vor zwei Tagen MEINE EIGENE NÄHMASCHINE als etwas verfrühtes Geburtstagsgeschenk gekriegt hab (hüpf, spring, sing! Danke Ma und Pa!) konnte ich auch dieses Projekt endlich angehen und habe dabei auch gleich die Maschine ausprobiert (die übrigens dringend einen Namen braucht, vielleicht hat ja einer von euch einen schönen Vorschlag! Die meisten meiner Gerätschaften werden irgendwann getauft, ich hatte mal eine Waschmaschine namens Hamlet ... die Spüle hieß Ophelia und stand gleich daneben ...)

Top und Rock habe ich dann mit meiner dunkelblauen Leinenjacke von Ulla Popken kombiniert, an der eine grün-türkise Tweedblume von Ness steckt, einem wunderbaren schottischen Label. Passend zur geballten Weisheit, die man so in einer Bibliothek vermutet (oder sich erhofft), habe ich dazu meinen Eulenohringe von Brigitte Bijou getragen, die schon beinahe schmerzhaft niedlich sind ...

Reading Project: Virginia Woolf's Diaries

I have loved Virginia Woolf's writing since I participated in a seminar about her novels in my first year of University and a large part of my graduation thesis was about Mrs Dalloway, Orlando and Woolf's relationship with Vita Sackville-West. I think it was To the Lighthouse that really hooked me with its wonderful descriptions of family dynamics and the coastal landscape; I have always found her writings to be unnervingly close to the reality of living a life.

Now I have embarked upon a very ambitious and very time-consuming reading project. I am going to read the five volumes of her diary that were published by the Hogarth Press in the 1970s and 80s and while I am reading these I try to read or re-read all the novels, non-fiction and short fiction that she writes about in her diaries. I have started some time ago with the diaries but I have just now decided to make this into a biiiiiiiiiiiiiiig, probably exhausting project. The local University has an excellent library and I have found quite a lot of material of Woolf's I haven't read before (sigh). So I guess some quotes will be popping up now and again:

Purple Haze

Today is a cool greyish autumn day and so I thought about doing a strong coloured autumn bouquet to light up the room (and my mood). I picked light pink and purple sedum, dark violet heliotrope, small white roses [Schneewittchen variety], pink roses [Jacques Cartier variety] and purple roses [Gräfin Astrid von Hardenberg variety - this variety has the best fragrance ever: like dark-red berries and unmistakably "rosy"], pink zinnias and something feathery and lilac-coloured which holds everything together. Last week I had a bouquet of mixed gerbera which was really pretty but not very exciting - today I used the remnants in an antique milk bottle for our little ancestral altar where we try to have a vase of flowers all year round:

Heute ist ein ziemlich trüber gräulicher Herbsttag, also dachte ich mir, es wär ganz gut, wenigstens per Blume Farbe ins Zimmer (und ein bisschen auch in meine Gedanken) zu bringen. Also habe ich aus unserem Garten hell- und dunkelpinke Fette Hennen, dunkelviolette Vanilleblume, kleine weiße Rosen [Sorte Schneewittchen], pinke Rosen [Sorte Jacques Cartier] und karmesinrote Rosen [Sorte Gräfin Astrid von Hardenberg - diese Sorte hat den besten Duft: sehr beerig und unverwechselbar "rosig" ...], rosa Zinnien und irgendwas sehr Fedriges ausgesucht, das fliederfarben ist und alles gut zusammenhält. Letzte Woche hatte ich eine Vase mit gemischten Gerbera, die wunderhübsch aber nicht so aufregend waren. Die Reste habe ich jetzt zu einem kleinen Strauß in einer antiken Milchflasche gemacht, die unter unserer Ahnengalerie steht, wo wir eigentlich immer eine kleine Vase mit Blumen hinstellen:

DIY: Make Your Own Buttons Tutorial

Last week I took a whole day off from my desk and got on with a bit of subversive crafting. As I really love statement buttons but don't own a button machine I had the idea of creating my buttons like this:

Letzte Woche habe ich mir mal einen ganzen Tag wech vom Schreibtisch gegönnt (wie der Ostwestfale so sagt) und wieder mal ein bisschen subversiv gebastelt. Buttons finde ich großartig, besitze aber keine Buttonmaschine - also bin ich auf die Idee gekommen, es etwas anders anzugehen:

I started doing cross stich when I was quite young and have completed a few projects over time but didn't really find a way to make use of them as I'm a bit skeptical about putting them in frames and hanging them up. But those buttons really make for small, quick to complete and very satisfying DIY projects! I start by selecting a button and using a pencil to draw its outline on a piece of cloth. Then I fill this outline with the design of my choice:

Sticken gehört zu meinen absoluten Lieblingstechniken und mit dem Kreuzstich habe ich schon in der Grundschule angefangen. Ich habe ein paar Kreuzstichprojekte beendet aber hatte bisher nicht die Möglichkeit, wirklich etwas mit ihnen anzufangen, da ich es eigentlich nicht so mag, sie einzurahmen und aufzuhängen. Aber Kreuzstich-Buttons sind wirklich super kleine, schnelle Projekte - in wenigen Stunden fertigzustellen und gleich anzupieken! Ich nehme mir einen Knopf, der groß genug ist und zeichne mit Bleistift den Umriss auf ein Stück Stoff. Das sticke ich dann aus, etwa so:

DIY: Woolly Jumper Saga I

Okay, this is the first progress report concerning my next biiiiiiig DIY project - a winter cardigan with jaquard pattern. I got this wonderful wool from a friend who keeps four sheep, one black sheep and three "Coburger Fuchs" sheep - this breed is actually in danger of extinction! The colour of its wool usually is a kind of creamy beige with long red hairs mixed in - I have used this wool before and am pretty exited! Now that the weather is fine but cooler I started combing wool big time, doing the black wool first:

Das hier ist das erste Kapitel einer laaaaangen Saga: mein Norwegerstrickjackenprojekt, das mich eine ganze Weile beschäftigen wird. Die wunderbare Wolle habe ich von einem Freund, der vier Schafe hält - ein schwarzes Schaf und drei "Coburger Füchse". Diese Rasse ist eine vom Aussterben bedrohte Haustierart, die Wolle ist cremefarben mit roten Grannenhaaren, je nach Tier unterschiedlich rot. Ich habe schon mal mit dieser Wolle gearbeitet und freue mich total! Jetzt, da es noch sonnig ist, aber etwas kühler, habe ich mit dem Kardieren angefangen, erst mal die schwarze Wolle:

Each of the two brushes weighs about two pounds, so this is kind of a work-out. Also the process tends to be a bit smelly as the wool washed AFTER spinning but the grease in the wool makes the hands really soft!

Jede der zwei Kardierbürsten wiegt so ungefähr ein Kilo, es ist also ein ziemliches Fitnessprogramm, außerdem ein bisschen müffelig, da die Wolle erst NACH dem Verspinnen gewaschen wird. Dafür macht das Wollfett die Hände total weich!
